About Brimstone Press |
|
Brimstone Press is a Western Australian independent press and Australia's leading publisher of dark fiction (horror, dark fantasy, and paranormal fiction). Founded in 2004 by Angela Challis and Shane Jiraiya Cummings, Brimstone Press established a strong track record of publishing short fiction through Shadowed Realms, Australia’s professional dark fiction online magazine. A SFWA-recognised pro magazine, Shadowed Realms published authors such as Poppy Z. Brite, Richard Harland, Robert Hood, Terry Dowling, and Kirstyn McDermott. Lee Battersby's story "Pater Familias" from Issue #3 was the first electronic story/flash fiction to win the Aurealis Award. In 2005, Brimstone expanded into non-fiction with the publication of HorrorScope, an award-winning online news and review zine. HorrorScope has grown to become the official news source for the Australian Horror Writers Association. In four years, the HorrorScope team has published close to 2,000 reviews and news articles, interviewed authors such as RL Stine and Charlaine Harris, and attracted more than 200,000 readers. Technorati ranks HorrorScope as one of the world's most popular horror blogs. With 2006 came the release of Brimstone Press' first nationally distributed mass-market book titles - Book of Shadows and Australian Dark Fantasy & Horror Volume One. Since then, Brimstone has continued to produce high-quality mass-market collections and anthologies, as well as limited edition, experimental publications such as Shadow Box and Black Box. Brimstone Press cemented its position as the leader in Australian dark fiction with the 2008 launch of Black: Australian Dark Culture Magazine, a nationally-distributed newsstand magazine. Black featured interviews with the likes of George A. Romero, Alice Cooper, M. Night Shyamalan, Supernatural's Jensen Ackles & Jared Padalecki, and Fiona Horne. Black also published Australian-exclusive fiction from Stephen King. In 2009, Black went on hiatus to be reformatted into an online publication. The free Eye of Fire e-zine has filled the void until Black's anticipated return.
Brimstone Press' projects and published fiction have won, or been
nominated for, every major genre award in Australia including the
Ditmar Award, the Aurealis Award, and the Australian Shadows Award. |
