Alright, so the ocean office thing didn’t work out. I’d been following the blog for a while, and I really liked the idea. We at the Futurist Club were convinced that this was going to be the future, the workplace of tomorrow where people would commute upwards to the surface, instead of horizontally across poorly-maintained roads. Currently, it looks like this wasn’t meant to be. Maybe at some point, when the infrastructure is more…there?
You can’t just get an office glass tinting company out to where you are, and then expect them to do their flawlessly-efficient work with no real ocean experience, or special stabilisation tools. They’re going to encounter the same types of problems when they finally get round to building the lunar colony, made of several glass bubbles, which are themselves comprised of hexagonal panes of glass. It will look fabulous, but life up there will be very frustrating at first. You want the glass tinted by a commercial tinting company? Well, you need to summon one from Earth, because there’s not enough space to set up a permanent business there. Such a pain, and in a place where window tinting is infinitely more important because of there being no atmosphere to protect you from the sun’s rays. Window tinting will probably be one of the very first places set up there, to be sure, but at the start there’s not going to be anything. Just a lot of irritated scientists who have to walk around shielding their eyes all the time, or wear permanent specs.
It’s going to be quite a testament to human ingenuity once it’s all done, though. Hopefully we can promptly install the commercial decorative glass. Melbourne can be quite sunny in the warmer months and having a tinted film will make all the difference. We need a strong place that can have a presence up there, so the domes will have that local flair. We’re a city of artisans, after all. I want THAT taken to the stars.
